Learning Objectives:

  • Upon completion participants will be able to describe the 21st century lifestyle factors that have triggered shifts in the composition of the the intestinal commensal microbiota.
  • Upon completion participants will be able to define the role of the short chain fatty acid butyrate in maintaining epithelial barrier integrity and protection against an allergic response to food.
  • Upon completion participants will be able to define a synbiotic as the paired delivery of bacteria with substrates for optimized growth and metabolite production.
